Our Family Mission

The start of school is quickly approaching.  In talking with friends, some seem relieved to invite structure back into their schedules, while others cringe at the routine and the busyness ahead.  For families with children, the start of school leads us back into more predictable routines, but also an underlying timeliness that can make us feel rushed and edgy.  All of sudden, our calendars are filled with to-do’s, activities, school schedules, parent meetings, and the list goes on.

For the past two years, we have been creating a family plan.  I am happy to say that this year our plan looks less like a list of  to-do’s and is more a list of “to-be’s”.  Of course, this list will undoubtedly influence the things we choose to do and the actions we take, but the focus will remain on how we hope to be.  When the focus is placed on accomplishments, it is too easy to get driven by quantity and goals, rather than quality and experience.  I hope that this plan will help us slow down the pace of life as a family, cherish the moments both small and large, and stay focused on the things that are really important to us.

The crux of our family plan is simple and only two sentences long, and I am sharing it below:

Mission:  Promote curiosity, open mindedness, courage, vulnerability, health and compassion.  Be true to yourself and others.

Actions:  Family Sundays and dinners with intent to discuss above.

Wonderful!! We always made it a point to have meals together most of the time. It got harder as the girls got older, but that is the one thing they loved and later said their friends liked and wished their families had done.
